Understanding Hexaxim: Your baby’s complete health shield

The Hexaxim vaccine is often called a “6-in-1” vaccine. Its primary importance lies in its ability to protect infants from six major infectious diseases with a single injection, significantly simplifying the vaccination process for both babies and parents.

1. What Diseases Does It Prevent?

Hexaxim provides high-level protection against:

  • Diphtheria: A serious throat and skin infection.
  • Tetanus: Also known as “lockjaw,” caused by bacteria entering wounds.
  • Pertussis: Commonly called “whooping cough,” which can be fatal for infants.
  • Hepatitis B: A viral infection that attacks the liver.
  • Poliomyelitis (Polio): A virus that can cause permanent paralysis.
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib): A leading cause of bacterial meningitis and pneumonia in young children.

2. Why is it Important for Your Child?

  • Fewer Needle Pricks: Traditionally, these six protections would require multiple separate injections. Hexaxim combines them into one, reducing the physical and emotional stress (and tears!) for your baby.
  • Streamlined Schedule: Because it covers six bases at once, it reduces the number of clinic visits required. This makes it much easier for busy parents to stay on track with the official immunization schedule.
  • High Efficacy: Clinical studies show that over 93% to 100% of children develop protective antibody levels against all six diseases after the primary series.
  • Ready-to-Use: Unlike some vaccines that need to be mixed (reconstituted) by a nurse, Hexaxim comes in a fully liquid, pre-filled syringe. This reduces the risk of preparation errors and ensures your child gets the exact dose needed.

3. The Vaccination Schedule

Hexaxim is typically given to infants starting at 6 weeks of age. A common primary series involves three doses (for example, at 6, 10, and 14 weeks) followed by a booster dose later in the second year of life to ensure long-term immunity.

A Note on Safety: Like all vaccines, Hexaxim may cause mild side effects such as a low-grade fever or redness at the injection site. These are normal signs that the immune system is learning how to fight these germs.
