WORLD MENINGITIS DAY
Protecting Children Through Awareness and Early Action
World Meningitis Day raises awareness of meningitis, a serious disease involving inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can affect people of all ages, including babies and children, and may progress rapidly.
Warning Signs Parents Should Know
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Vomiting and sensitivity to light
- Confusion, unusual sleepiness, or difficulty waking
- Seizures
- A red or purple rash that does not fade when pressed
In babies, signs may include poor feeding, irritability, a weak or unusual cry, a bulging soft spot, or difficulty waking.
How Can Parents Help Prevent Meningitis?
- Keep your childβs vaccinations up to date, including recommended vaccines that protect against certain causes of meningitis.
- Encourage regular handwashing and good respiratory hygiene.
- Seek medical advice promptly if your child has concerning symptoms.
Meningitis is a medical emergency. Do not wait for all symptoms or a rash to appear. Seek emergency medical care immediately if meningitis is suspected. Early diagnosis and treatment can save lives.
