KIDS ENT MONTH: COMMON EYE CONDITIONS IN CHILDREN
Common eye conditions in children include refractive errors, conjunctivitis, and lazy eye.
Refractive errors
- Astigmatism: Irregularly curved cornea that causes blurry vision
- Hyperopia: Farsightedness that causes blurred vision
- Myopia: Nearsightedness that causes blurred vision
Conjunctivitis
- Also known as “pink eye”, this condition is caused by inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva
- It can be viral or bacterial, or an allergic reaction
- Symptoms include redness, itchiness, tearing, and discharge
Lazy eye (amblyopia)
- Occurs when one eye has worse vision than the other
- Can be caused by developmental issues
Other eye conditions Strabismus (crossed eyes), Chalazion (small lump on the eyelid), Corneal abrasion (scratched cornea),
Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid), and Nystagmus (rapid and involuntary eye movement).
- Prevention
To prevent eye problems in children, get regular checkups with an eye care specialist.
- When to seek help
Seek help if your child has discomfort, itchiness, redness, or a sticky or gooey discharge
