Cholera Vaccination: What Parents Should Know

Cholera Vaccination: What Parents Should Know

Cholera is a serious intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, usually spread through contaminated food or water. It can cause sudden, severe watery diarrhoea and vomiting, which may lead to dangerous dehydration, particularly in young children.

One important way to reduce the risk of cholera is oral cholera vaccination, especially for children living in or travelling to areas where cholera occurs or during outbreak-control campaigns.

💉 What Is the Cholera Vaccine?

Cholera vaccines used in public-health programmes are generally given by mouth (oral vaccine) rather than by injection. Depending on the vaccine product and the child’s age, protection may require more than one dose.

Parents should follow the vaccination schedule provided by their healthcare provider or public-health programme and ensure that all recommended doses are received.

🛡️ Benefits of Cholera Vaccination

1. Helps Protect Against Cholera

The vaccine reduces a child’s risk of developing cholera when exposed to the bacteria.

2. Helps Reduce Severe Illness

Vaccination can reduce the likelihood of severe cholera and its potentially dangerous complications, particularly dehydration.

3. Helps Protect Communities

When more people are vaccinated, transmission can be reduced, helping protect vulnerable members of the community.

4. Particularly Valuable During Outbreaks

Oral cholera vaccines can be an important tool during cholera outbreaks and in areas where the disease is common.

5. Supports Other Prevention Measures

Vaccination provides an additional layer of protection but does not replace safe water, good sanitation, handwashing, and food hygiene.

🥤 What Should Parents Do After Their Child Receives the Oral Cholera Vaccine?

Continue Normal Feeding and Fluids

Unless your healthcare provider gives different instructions, your child can continue normal feeding and drinking after vaccination.

Follow Product-Specific Instructions

Some oral cholera vaccines have specific instructions about food, drinks, or other medicines around the time of vaccination. Follow the instructions provided by the healthcare professional or vaccine manufacturer.

Expect Mild Reactions

Some children may experience temporary symptoms such as:

  • Mild stomach discomfort
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache or tiredness

These reactions are generally mild and short-lived.

Maintain Good Hygiene

Even after vaccination, continue to:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and safe water.
  • Drink safe, treated or properly boiled water.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
  • Cook food properly.
  • Keep food covered and stored safely.
  • Use clean toilets and dispose of faeces safely.

Complete the Recommended Doses

One of the most important precautions is not to miss subsequent doses when the vaccine schedule requires more than one dose. Keep your child’s vaccination record safe.

🚨 When Should Parents Seek Medical Attention?

Seek medical care promptly if your child develops profuse watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, reduced urination, extreme thirst, unusual sleepiness, sunken eyes, or other signs of dehydration.

Remember: vaccination does not prevent every case of diarrhoea, and a vaccinated child can still become dehydrated from diarrhoea caused by cholera or another infection.

If your child develops diarrhoea or vomiting, start appropriate oral rehydration solution (ORS) and seek medical advice, particularly if symptoms are severe or your child is showing signs of dehydration.

💙 A Simple Reminder for Parents

The cholera vaccine is an important tool for protecting children, but prevention requires more than vaccination.

Keep your child’s vaccinations up to date, provide safe water and food, practise good hand hygiene, and seek medical care early if your child develops severe diarrhoea or vomiting.
