A Peptic ulcer, also known as Stomach ulcer is a sore that develops on the lining of the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). Peptic ulcers are caused by an imbalance between the digestive juices produced by the stomach and the various factors that protect the lining of the stomach.
Causes
The most common cause of stomach ulcers in children is a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). H. pylori can infect the stomach lining and cause inflammation and irritation. Other causes of stomach ulcers in children include:
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and aspirin
- Stress
- Certain medical conditions, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
- Certain foods and drinks, such as caffeine, alcohol, and citrus fruits
Symptoms
The symptoms of stomach ulcers in children can vary depending on the severity of the ulcer. Some common symptoms include:
- Abdominal pain, especially in the upper abdomen
- Heartburn
- Indigestion
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
- Bloody stools
Treatment
Treatment for stomach ulcers in children will depend on the cause of the ulcer. If the ulcer is caused by H. pylori, the child will be treated with antibiotics. If the ulcer is caused by NSAIDs, the child may need to switch to a different type of medication. Other treatments for stomach ulcers in children include:
- Antacids to reduce stomach acid
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to block acid production
- H2 blockers to reduce acid production
- Sucralfate to coat the stomach lining and protect it from acid
