INTERNATIONAL INFECTION PREVENTION WEEK

INTERNATIONAL INFECTION PREVENTION WEEK

Prevent Infections, Protect Lives, Keep Children Healthy!

International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) raises awareness about the importance of preventing infections and promoting safe practices in our homes, schools, hospitals, and communities.

Children are especially vulnerable to infections because their immune systems are still developing. However, simple everyday habits can significantly reduce the spread of harmful germs and protect children from preventable illnesses.

How Can We Prevent Infections?

1. Practise Proper Hand Hygiene
Wash hands with soap and running water before eating, after using the toilet, after playing, and after coughing or sneezing. Handwashing remains one of the simplest ways to prevent the spread of infections.

2. Keep Immunisations Up to Date
Vaccines protect children against several serious infectious diseases. Follow the recommended childhood immunisation schedule and consult your healthcare provider about any missed doses.

3. Maintain Good Respiratory Hygiene
Encourage children to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their elbow. Avoid close contact with others when unwell, where possible.

4. Promote Food and Water Safety
Provide safe drinking water, wash fruits and vegetables properly, prepare food hygienically, and ensure meals are thoroughly cooked.

5. Keep Surroundings Clean
Regularly clean frequently touched surfaces, toys, and shared items. Ensure rooms are adequately ventilated and dispose of waste safely.

6. Use Antibiotics Responsibly
Never give children antibiotics without appropriate medical advice. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections, and their misuse can contribute to antimicrobial resistance.

7. Seek Medical Care Promptly
Consult a healthcare professional when your child develops concerning symptoms. Difficulty breathing, seizures, or unusual difficulty waking require urgent medical attention.

Infection Prevention in Healthcare Facilities

Preventing infections is a shared responsibility. Healthcare facilities help protect patients through proper hand hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, safe injection practices, appropriate use of protective equipment, and responsible antibiotic prescribing.

At The Pediatric Centre, infection prevention is an important part of providing safe, quality care for every child.

Our Message This Week

Clean hands. Safe practices. Healthy children.

Every preventive action matters. Let us work together to reduce infections, protect vulnerable children, and build healthier families and communities.
