WORLD RABIES DAY
Prevent Rabies. Protect Every Child.
World Rabies Day, observed every September 28, raises awareness about rabies prevention and the importance of prompt action after exposure. Rabies is a serious viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. However, rabies is preventable with timely post-exposure care.
How Can Children Be Exposed?
Rabies is most commonly transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, particularly dogs. Children may be at greater risk because they may approach or play with unfamiliar animals.
What Should Parents Do After a Bite or Scratch?
- Immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and plenty of running water for about 15 minutes.
- Do not apply harmful substances or attempt to close the wound yourself.
- Seek medical attention immediately, even if the wound appears minor.
- A healthcare professional will assess the exposure and determine whether rabies vaccination and/or rabies immunoglobulin is required.
Prevention Starts With Awareness
Teach children never to approach, touch, or play with unfamiliar or stray animals, even if they appear friendly. Responsible vaccination of dogs and other susceptible animals is also essential for preventing rabies.
Every bite matters. Every minute counts. Protect your child. Prevent rabies.
