MICRONUTRIENT DEFICIENCY IN CHILDREN
Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals that children need in small amounts for healthy growth, brain development, strong immunity, and proper body function. When a child does not get enough of these nutrients, micronutrient deficiency can occur.
Common Deficiencies
Some of the most common include:
- Iron deficiency: May cause anemia, tiredness, weakness, and poor concentration.
- Vitamin A deficiency: Can affect vision and immunity.
- Vitamin D deficiency: Can affect healthy bone development.
- Iodine deficiency: Can affect growth and brain development.
- Zinc deficiency: May affect growth, appetite, and immune function.
What Can Parents Do?
Offer children a varied, balanced diet containing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, eggs, fish, meat, dairy products, and other nutrient-rich foods where available. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months, followed by appropriate complementary foods alongside continued breastfeeding.
Some children may need supplements because of age, diet, medical conditions, or increased nutritional needs. Supplements should only be given when recommended by a healthcare professional.
Regular growth monitoring and medical check-ups can help identify nutritional problems early.
Healthy nutrition today supports a healthier future.
