Sepsis in Children: What Every Parent Should Know
Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to an infection damages its own organs and tissues. It can affect children of any age and requires immediate medical attention.
What Causes Sepsis?
Sepsis usually develops from infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. It may begin from:
- Pneumonia
- Bloodstream infections

Warning Signs of Sepsis in Children
Parents should seek urgent medical care if a child has:

- Refusal to eat or drink
- Fast heartbeat
- Cold, pale, or mottled skin
- Reduced urination
- Confusion or unusual irritability

How Can Sepsis Be Prevented?
The risk of sepsis can be reduced by:
- Ensuring your child receives all recommended vaccinations.
- Treating infections early and seeking medical attention promptly.
- Practicing good hand hygiene.
- Keeping cuts and wounds clean and covered.
- Ensuring good nutrition and adequate hydration.
- Completing prescribed medications exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
