TIPS TO PREVENT CONSTIPATION

Constipation is a common problem in children. It is characterized by infrequent bowel movements or hard, dry stools. Constipation can be uncomfortable and even painful for children. It can also lead to other problems, such as tears in the anus and pile.

The symptoms of constipation in kids can vary depending on the child. However, some common symptoms include:

  • Fewer than three bowel movements a week
  • Hard, dry stools
  • Difficulty passing stools
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Straining to pass stools
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Feeling like there is stool stuck in the rectum
  • Leakage of liquid stool around the hard stool

There are a few things you can do to help protect your child from constipation:

  • Encourage your child to eat a healthy diet. A diet that is low in fiber and high in fat and sugar can contribute to constipation. Make sure your child eats plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids. Fluids help to keep the stool soft and easy to pass. Encourage your child to drink water, milk, and other fluids throughout the day.
  • Get your child regular exercise. Exercise helps to keep the digestive system healthy and moving. Encourage your child to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
  • Establish a regular toilet routine. Encourage your child to sit on the toilet for a few minutes after each meal. This will help to train their body to have a bowel movement at the same time each day.
  • Don’t ignore the urge to go. When your child feels the urge to go to the bathroom, don’t make them wait. Encourage them to go right away.
  • Be patient. Constipation can be a frustrating problem for both children and parents. Be patient and supportive, and don’t give up on trying to help your child overcome it.

If your child is constipated, there are a few things you can do to help relieve the symptoms:

  • Give your child warm fluids, such as soups e.g chicken soup, Smoothie or fruit juice.
  • Massage your child’s stomach.
  • Encourage your child to do some gentle exercises, such as leg lifts or bicycle kicks.
  • Use a warm compress on your child’s abdomen.

If your child’s constipation is severe or does not improve after a few days, see your doctor.
