💨 Harmattan Health: Quick Prevention Guide
The Harmattan season’s dry, dusty air increases the risk of respiratory infections (colds, flu, asthma flare-ups). Protect your airways with these essential, short strategies:
Protection & Air Quality
- Wear a Mask: Use a face mask (dust or medical) whenever you go outside to filter dust and cold air.
- Close Windows: Keep doors and windows shut to minimize indoor dust.
- Damp Cleaning: Use wet mops/cloths instead of dry sweeping to avoid stirring up particulate matter.
- Increase Humidity: Use a humidifier or bowls of water indoors to moisten the dry air.
Hydration & Care
- Drink Water: Stay well-hydrated throughout the day to keep mucous membranes moist.
- Moisturize Nasal Passages: Apply petroleum jelly inside the nostrils or use saline sprays to prevent dryness and nosebleeds.
Immunity & Hygiene
- Wash Hands Often: Frequent handwashing is critical to prevent the spread of viruses (cold/flu).
- Get Enough Rest: Prioritize sleep to support your immune system.
- Eat Well: Focus on a diet rich in vitamins (especially C) and zinc.
- Manage Chronic Conditions: Asthma and allergy sufferers must keep medication handy and use it as prescribed.
Seek medical help for severe symptoms like persistent fever, difficulty breathing, or worsening cough.
